Survey of landowners and farm operators in the MRC Memphrémagog

In the MRC Memphremagog, agricultural land is not only a mean of production. It feeds the territory, supports agricultural activities, keeps rural areas vibrant and shapes the distinctive landscapes of the area. When a lands remains cultivated, it is not only the agricultural vocation that is preserved, but also the views, the open spaces as well as an important part of the territory’s identity.

However, many factors can weaken this equilibrium. The pressure on land use, the rise of the land’s value, the difficulties in land’s access, the succession challenges as well as the risk that some land parcels lose their agricultural vocation all rise real questions concerning the territory’s future. In this context, the MRC Memphremagog is studying the possibility of creating an Agricultural Landscape Social Utility Trust, a tool that could help protect the agricultural vocation of some land overt time, while preserving the living landscapes that set apart the Memphremagog region.
